Richard Herring

Went to see Richard Herring doing his stnad up tour thing - What is Love Anyway. Very good, but very cold. Salisbury Arts Centre is an old church with no apparent heating. Photo on right, taken with phone as we stalked him to get a copy of his book signed.

Also on the right a deer photo that I've been mucking around with. Not sure I like it, but felt I needed to add another photo for January to my Bentley Wood diary 2012. Hopefully some snow soon - that'll make for some night HDR photos.

RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch

Did the bird count thingy this monrning - maximum number of birds of the same species in the garden at the same time during a one hour period. My results:3 bluetit, 2 robin, 3 blackbird, 1 sparrowhawk, 1 dunnock, 3 chaffinch, 7 house sparrow, 3 wood pigeon and 1 wren.

Very different to last year. And the sparrowhawk that landed briefly on the ground after trying to take a blackbird scared most of the birds off for about quarter of an hour right at the beginning of my count.

Year List 2012

So the rules for the 2012 Year List are that all birds must be spotted and photographed within the boundary of Bentley Wood. My target for the year is 50 birds (60 may be possible if I get lucky with some unlikely birds flying overhead. But I'm off to a reasonable start with some difficult ones (Hawfinch, Crossbill, Peregrine) already done. See it here.

The Woods

Two photos on the right to kick off two of my aims for 2012. The Woodstack photo is a contender for the January Bentley Wood photo. Not sure it's wintery enough. The Jay photo is one for the Bentley Wood Year List. I will create separate pages shortly.

Sneaky Hawfinches

Hawfinches are a very sneaky bird - difficult to find and even harder to photograph. But I made a start today - found 5 in the woods, and managed to get a so-so photo. See right. This might mean my amibtions for 2012 could be achieved rather early. So my full set of goals are:

1. Take decent photograph of Hawfinch.
2. Take decent photograph of Grass Snake.
3. Do a Bentley Wood Year List.
4. Do a "Year in Bentley Wood" photo diary.
5. Rewrite website to use MySQL.

I will use these as excuse for not doing all the maintenance around the house that needs doing.
